Supervision Skills for Health & Social Service Professionals


This two day, practical workshop run by LEAD’s Aly McNicoll in association with the New Zealand Coaching & Mentoring Centre, equips experienced practitioners with the tools and skills to supervise others in their own discipline area.

Completion of this course and the assessment requirements provides you with a NZQA approved micro-credential, registered on the National Qualifications Framework at Level 5, 5 credits.

This skills based training enables senior staff to provide effective supervision for others in their own discipline area.

  • introduces supervision as a professional development process for health & social service professionals

  • provides training and processes for one to one clinical supervision

  • provides opportunities for participants to experience the power of supervision through practice activities and work based tasks.

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • define supervision, the role of the supervisor and the limits and boundaries to the role

  • establish supervision relationships

  • develop supervision contracts and negotiate goals for individual supervision sessions

  • use 7 SIMPLE skills to enhance supervisee reflection and learning

  • manage one to one supervision sessions

  • use a range of frameworks and tools for effective supervision

  • provide feedback on practice in the supervision context

  • discuss ethical boundaries and professional issues in the supervision process

  • discuss cultural perspectives on supervision.
